In the early 1960s, the congregation of Pompano Baptist Temple (now known as Grace Baptist Church) began discussing the need for a quality Christian school in South Florida. They envisioned students being taught by Christian teachers who love Christ and place Him at the center of all academic, spiritual, and physical training. After much prayer and countless hours of preparation, Pompano Baptist School opened its doors in September of 1965. That first year, there were just fifteen students and one teacher. By 1970, several new buildings had been constructed, enrollment was steadily increasing, and a new name was chosen for the school: Highlands Christian Academy. The tenth anniversary of the school proved to be a banner year. A new gymnasium was constructed?providing science labs, music rooms, and cafeteria facilities. That year also saw Highlands? first graduating class!Over the next decade, athletic fields were developed and additional classrooms built. In 1990, a new church auditorium was constructed, providing a place for student chapel services as well as school plays and musicals. The next phase of major construction occurred in 1999, when a new secondary building was completed. The new facility includes two fully-equipped computer labs, a full-service cafeteria, and administrative offices. The next year lights were installed on all three athletic fields, and a few years later, in 2006, the elementary building was renovated. In 2010 and 2011 bleachers were added to the football field, brick pavers laid in front of the gymnasium, and new entrances constructed for the elementary building and gymnasium. In addition to physical improvements to the campus, the past several years have seen an increased focus on technological developments. Roaming computer labs (laptops) were implemented, first for the secondary building and then for the elementary. Active boards are being utilized in a majority of the classrooms. Since the school?s inception nearly 50 years ago, 1,500 students have graduated from HCA with their high school diploma. Each school year, more than 600 students receive a broad-spectrum Christian education and are trained in biblical living by 70+ faculty and staff members. As we reflect on the faithfulness and favor God has shown to HCA for nearly half a century, we look forward to the coming years with humble anticipation of what He will accomplish next. Will you join with us in prayer for HCA? We know God has a unique and wonderful plan for each child who passes through our doors. We are excited about serving each one by providing a Christ-centered education while modeling the grace and love that Jesus Christ has generously given to us.
